Swimming from the very early age is one of the aspects of health of babies. The basis for early swimming is the innate physiological reflexes. A child is born with a certain number of innate reflexes: sucking, swallowing, grasping, Moro, balancing, etc. One of such reflexes is the reflex of swimming and holding breath when a drop of water falls onto the nasolabial triangle. By the way, we do other physical exercises based on innate reflexes. If those reflexes are not used, they go away by the time the baby is about 3-4 months old. If one exercises those reflexes, then such exercises will develop the children not only physically, but also intellectually. During such exercises a child learns water environment, gets more emotional connection with his parents and other babies, plays with toys, learns poems, and overall gets more information to stimulate his brain development then if he didn’t go swimming.
Swimming is a hygienic procedure, hydro-massage, and tempering all at the same time. It’s hard to overestimate the importance of swimming during infancy.
Swimming strengthens cardiovascular and respiratory systems, promotes the correct development of musculoskeletal apparatus, stimulates appetite and increases the speed of metabolic processes of a baby. Strong reactions of excitement within the core of the brain, transform to the reactions of slowing down by inhibition; this results in a deep healthy sleep.
What age is best for starting swimming classes? The earlier – the better. A home bathtub usually works for swimming for up to the age of 2 months. After the baby turns 2 months, the family is encouraged to start going to a swimming pool. Ideally parents should prepare for swimming with the infant before his birth: read up about it, meet with the instructor, see a few classes, talk to the other parents who swim with their babies.
It is usually the case that only healthy children are allowed to attend swimming classes. What about the kids who have some problems with their health? Won’t they need to improve their health? My rich experience shows me that swimming is a very effective method for restoring health from many pathologic conditions. For each child both benefits and risk factors must be considered, and accordingly conditions must be created for the baby and his parents.
